Rush

What a rush to finally be publishing on my own blog, with a very cute co-author and yummy cook at that. You can read more about us when we finish filling in the about page.

As I got closer to completing the design and backend of this site, I pondered what this first post should say. It should be something memorable, I thought. Or maybe something funny and endearing. Or all three. Or… clearly, I was thinking too much about it. And for no reason I can explain, a couple days ago something someone had scrawled on the desk in front of me in a Grade 10 math class jumped into my mind.

I still don’t understand why after all these years, I remember this little rhyme so clearly, much more clearly than any math lessons I had in Grade 10, that’s for certain. I do recall that my teacher was Mrs. Ineson, the class was in a portable, right off the football field, on the south end of campus, and Adam Gzowski (hi Adam!) sat in front of me in that class, but I don’t recall if it was him who wrote the rhyme on the desk . I just copied the verse because I thought it was so amusing and in copying it, managed to commit it to memory for evermore.

Title and author: unknown
The British Columbia Folklore Society has some interesting analysis about the rhyme.

One bright day in the middle of the night,
Two dead boys got up to fight.
Back to back they faced each other,
drew their swords and shot each other.
A deaf policeman heard the noise
and ran to save the two dead boys.
And if you don’t believe this lie is true,
go ask the blind man, he saw it too.
