The same old holiday songs sung the same old way wear on me pretty quickly each year. But I really enjoy the more unusual songs, and new versions of traditional songs. This is why I really like the Barenaked Ladies holiday efforts, among others.
Anyhow, Eric Zorn and Mary Schmich of Tribune fame annually lead Songs of Good Cheer, raising money for local charities through Chicago Tribune Holiday Giving. This year, the columnists-turned-singer/songwriters (for a day or two each year, at least) held a contest to “create the most amusing match of the lyrics to a familiar winter holiday song with the tune of a familiar non-holiday song.”
So if any of the above has tickled your fancy, you’ll love Rudolph sung to the tune of Folsom Prison Blues, and other inventive mixes here.
